What can we learn from each other

I was following a blogging path from BarCamp Ireland and landed at an Irish site where I got some ideas for this blog.

ICT Ireland met to try to scope out a new initiative to encourage the take-up of home computers in Ireland and to further develop computer competence in the community sector. The aim is to help employers and employees improve their general ICT skills.

Kathryn Raleigh, Director ICT Ireland said: "There is a great opportunity for both the technology sector and society to benefit from the development of a meaningful home computing initiative. If we are to develop a true knowledge society, and continue to be seen as a centre for excellence in technology, we need to close the gap between business and civic society."

One of the practical aspects was about how young people could do something related to iPods and computers. There are untapped opportunities for podcasters and videobloggers also in Europe.

Ms Raleigh went on to say: According the latest CSO statistics, just under

* 55% of households have a home computer in Ireland
* 82% in Sweden,
* 62% in the US and
* 64% in UK.

The initiative will aim to address our poor rating by providing equitable and meaningful access to technology in the home, so we can ensure that all citizens progress in the knowledge society.

I would like to see more activities like BarCamps and Mashups in Europe. We should get things moving at the grassroots level. Innovations happens also in small units. Web 2.0 provides new possibilites.

What do you think?
