[edit] Push Beyond Convention

More often than not, there are lots of companies that don’t try and push beyond convention. Its those few companies that do push the edge that are the ones that last a long time, and make a significant impact in our world.

Pushing the limits and employing cutting edge techniques and best practices are what will bring more business into the EU and regions and elevate the local scene above what it is.

[edit] Good morning Europe

What kind of cooperation do we need in the union to engage the sleeping potentials that we have? We have about 20 million unemployed in Europe today. Big junks of workplaces will still be dispatched to China, India, Brazil and other emerging industrial nations. It’s great that the people, outside the traditional industrial western nations, can get modern factories to their countries instead of having to look for economic prosperity through travel for bread and butter from country to country. But we need to find ways of incorporating those that are now left outside.

  • Information Society Technologies (IST) research to catalyse systemic innovation, in order to enable high-quality and productive person-centric and collaborative new working environments in Europe.
  • To achieve this aim it is necessary to link European ‘dream team’ communities of research and deployment in a cross disciplinary manner.
  • These communities are based on web-based membership registration by interested individuals.

[edit] Full Speed

The Finnish economy is running better than ever. These golden days might continue for some years. But there are signs indicating that we are not the same Nordic tiger nation, as after the 90s economic crisis, that by some miracle and magic combination succeeded to breed a company like Nokia to its present might. It’s an example of a bold and single minded effort to do something big out a country in the periphery of the European Union.

[edit] Success Stories

We need more success stories. A new Nokia, or Ikea (Sweden), would be a dream come true but it might be even better to get 50 000 to 100 000 entrepreneurs to run smaller family businesses. We need innovative start-ups to create new services and products that can be sold on a global market. There are opportunities both in east and west. The Russian economy is booming due to the rising price of energy. We have large markets just around the corner. St. Petersburg alone has more people than we have in this entire country.

[edit] Creative Energy

But where can we tap for the creative energy needed to get the new innovators and company creators to take action? My educated guess is that we can’t do these wonders alone anymore. We should be able to use the strengths of a European wide union. But smaller companies in Finland and elsewhere are often destined to work and create only inside our / their national boundaries. Imagine what it could mean if we learned to Collaborate@Work on a European level. If we all – from grass roots to high level officials and management teams – would learn to use the technological tools and gadgets that are available for cross national cooperation.

[edit] Wonderful Tools

We do now have wonderful tools for starting a new era for European wide cooperative search for new business models and working practices. We have the technology needed. It’s all available, but like an old man, from my small home village who bought himself a music instrument, said “This is great, now I have a violin, but I still need to learn to play.”

[edit] How to play

He didn’t actually learn to play the instrumen at all during his lifetime but he became a happy violin owner who entertained himself and sometimes the curious kids of the village. His attitude was right; his naïve trust in his own ability to learn to play his music instrument inspired others. Mr. Väinö Häkkinen is a living legend due to his great attitude to learning new things.

[edit] European co-operation

creative co-operation

We need this same mindset for improved European wide creative co-operation. Ami@Work is the brand new violin, the next step is, according to my understanding, is to learn to play together. We should or could put together small chamber music teams, get out from out villages, create and play some new tunes and go for the global audience. Oh Lord! Wouldn’t that be great?

It’s early morning in Loviisa, my present home town, today, the sun is shining, and as you know, the sun never goes down here at this time of the year. Have a great Work or Vacation day!

[edit] Information Society

  • Erkki Liikanen, European Commissioner for Enterprise and the Information Society observed at the launch plenary that "Innovation is not just a matter of buying technology, it is about redesigning businesses processes and the way things are done. Mobile communications, particularly the next generation of mobile services which allow high speed access to the Internet, e-mail or databases while on the move, will deliver a major boost to productivity and help to strengthen our competitiveness. AMI@Work is a highly innovative way to look at how we can make work more interesting, creative and productive".
