[edit] Services for Living Labs
CO-LLABS/DEN4DEK/LABORANOVA one-day Workshop at ICE 2009, 24 June 2009
Organized by Jens Schumacher and Karin Feurstein (FHV) Contact: karin.feurstein@fhv.at
Workshop Objectives
This workshop aims to bring together researchers, innovation experts and Living Lab initiatives to discuss on current developments in the field of Living Labs. The Living Lab movement is steadily growing and expanding. There is now a broad base of experiences and of knowledge about the individual implementations and capabilities of the Living Labs all over Europe. However, a current overview over tools and methods used to implement and maintain in their particular setting is so far missing, while at the same time more and more tools and methods are getting available due to regional, national and European developments.
Workshop structure
This workshop is concerned with 2 major questions in the field of innovations in Living Labs:
1. What kind of services are currently available to support the innovation capabilities of Living Labs
2. How has an architectural approach to look like in order to ensure the integration of upcoming services in a common Service suite for Living Labs?
The first session will give an overview over the current good practices findings in the European Network of Living Labs. These encouraging results show an increasing number of Living Labs with different settings and requirements. Based on these findings the session will investigate the environment in which services for innovation can be deployed. Here, the architecture plays a major role in the meaning of how to deploy a platform for the various services available and how to link the different services to the different innovation stages of the innovation process. Some first ideas will be shown how this serious challenge can be addressed and handled. Next, the session will move on with concrete methods and services that have been deployed at various sites to improve the innovation process taking into account the various particularities of the individual Living Labs. The session will present different available and upcoming services for the different innovation phases in Living Labs and will give an insight about their capabilities.

[edit] Living Labs and SME Innovation in European Regions
CO-LLABS two-day Workshop at ICE 2009, 23-24 June 2009
Organized by: Hans Schaffers and Roberto Santoro (ESoCE-Net)
Contact: hschaffers@esoce.net
1. Workshop objective
This 2-day CO-LLABS workshop aims to bring together policy representatives, researchers, innovation agencies and living labs initiatives to discuss policies, strategies, innovation instruments and innovation initiatives to boost rural and regional innovation through Living Labs approaches. The workshop will evaluate the benefits of the living lab approach for regional, SME oriented innovation and will identify the conditions to be established in order to integrate living labs successfully into regional innovation policies and benefiting SME innovation. The workshop will not just present “feel good” stories, but will draw from practice and present practical lessons to be learned for enhancing SME innovation. Part of the workshop is to identify and discuss ongoing project funding opportunities e.g. at CIP, INTERREG or FP7 level. The workshop will be open for all ICE 2009 participants (www.ice-conference.org) and will be concluded with a planning session directed to the CO-LLABS consortium and supporting partners (others welcome).
CO-LLABS partners are requested to prepare short position papers which will be included in a CO-LLABS Strategy Document which will be published in advance to facilitate the workshop and which aims for a wide distribution. Contributions will be presented and discussed during the workshop. Contributions from other projects and initiatives are encouraged. See section 6 for instructions and topics to address.
2. Workshop structure
The workshop concentrates on the role of Living labs to boost rural and regional innovation for SMEs. We do so in concentrating on the following themes:
- Best practices of living labs supporting business innovation;
- Living Labs pilots at (inter-)regional level;
- Policies and New instruments to stimulate SME innovation;
- Business models for future sustainability of Living Labs.
1) Best practices of living labs supporting business innovation
Results of the current CO-LLABS study into best practices of living labs supporting SMES will be presented.
2) Living Labs pilots at (inter-)regional level
We will discuss ongoing initiatives and opportunities, as well as lessons learned from emerging initiatives, to create living labs pilots fostering SME innovation. Key topics will be:
• How may Living labs pilots contribute to open innovation, business creation and entrepreneurship, and how will they support SME innovation.
• How are living labs pilots possibly crossing territorial and sector dimensions
• How could living lab pilots be linked with or related to national and regional initiatives
• What are the opportunities in next European calls, and how may CO-LLABS prepare the way
3) Policies and New instruments to stimulate SME innovation
Emphasis is in particular on the role of innovation and policy stakeholders in enhancing the innovation environment, and how collaboration between these agencies, research institutes and living labs could be grounded in successful business models. Several representatives of Innovation Agencies in European regions will present their regional innovation system in particular discussing the role of living labs and innovation policies. It will be discussed the opportunities for living labs and conditions to be created in order to successfully integrate living labs approaches into the regional innovation policies.
4) Business models for future sustainability of Living Labs
Key topics will be:
• Sustainable business models for regional collaboration among living labs, regional stakeholders, SMEs
• Examples of viable business models presented by CO-LLABS partners.
